This course guide provides resources to find elected officials at the local, state and federal levels. It also provides resources to learn more about legislation, policy, and advocacy.

Legislative Process – Contacting Officials

  1. Students are required to research and document (using the elected officials form) their elected (1) local (city/county); (2) state and (3) federal officials.  (10 pts).

  2. Once you have identified your elected official, go to the states webpage and view their webpage.  Review legislation that they are currently sponsoring (or recently sponsored) and write a letter/send an email to one of your elected officials regarding a current piece of legislation they have introduced. (10 pts).  Letters should introduce the student to the official, state the student’s stance (support or opposition of the particular piece of legislation. Refer to the sample letter to elected officials as a guide. This assignment is due at the beginning of class on Thursday, September 6, 2018.

How to Contact Elected Officials; How to Write an Effective Letter

There are several reasons it’s worth your while to write a letter to an elected official, including:

  • To explain to an official how a particular issue affects you or your group.
  • To express support for a proposed law, policy, or course of action.
  • To oppose a proposed law, policy, or course of action.
