World History: Websites & Internet Indexes

This guide will help you find reliable information on history, in both print and online sources.

Evaluating Websites

When using a search engine or metasearch engine, spend some time investigating the sites--make sure that they are legitimate! Remember to apply the five evaluation criteria:

  • Accuracy (Is the information presented verifiable?)
  • Authority (Who wrote/sponsored the web site?)
  • Objectivity (What is the site's purpose--to inform, to persuade, to sell?)
  • Currency (When was the site created? Are the links still active?)
  • Use (Can the site be used for college research? Basic information? Plain silliness?)
