STLCC libraries subscribe to a wide range of databases. You must be a current student, staff, or faculty member of STLCC to use these databases. Below are just a few of the most useful databases for controversial issues. Academic Search Elite or Academic OneFile are good starting places for general magazine and journal articles on a wide variety of subjects. Not all articles are full text.

MAS Ultra - School Edition This link opens in a new window
This database is useful for ENG 060, 079 & RDG classes. It contains full text for nearly 500 popular magazines, reference books, and primary source documents, and an image collection of over 592,000 photos, maps & flags, color PDFs.
This database contains full text for nearly 500 popular magazines including America's Civil War, American Heritage, American History, Archaeology, Astronomy, Bioscience, Careers & Colleges, Civil War Times, Congressional Digest, Discover, History Today, Nation, National Review, New Republic, New Scientist, Popular Science, Science News, Scientific American, Smithsonian, etc. All full-text articles are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles). Full text is also available for 85,670 biographies, over 107,000 primary source documents and more than 360 reference books (including the Columbia Encyclopedia, the CIA World Fact Book and World Almanac & Book of Facts); an Image Collection of over 592,000 photos, maps & flags, color PDFs; and expanded full-text backfiles (back to 1975) for key magazines.

Academic Search Premier includes 4645 magazines and journals in full text, of which 3855 are peer-reviewed. The database indexes and abstracts a total of18,999 magazines & journals.

Search inside newspapers from around the world, or just one newspaper or a regional collection. Special Reports on current issues include links directly to quality newspaper articles. Some news magazines are also included.
Five full text databases are included. NewsBank Academic Library Collection provides contemporary articles from national and international newspapers, wire services and magazines from 1986 forward. Newsbank Retrospective covers 1970-1991 and focuses on contemporary American History. MOREnet offered Full-Text Newspapers includes local, regional and national newspapers in one searchable database. The Kansas City Star covers 1991-Current and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch covers 1988-Current.

Another great starting place with articles that explore different sides of current issues. Includes ideas for research topics. Search by keyword or browse the "Issues in the Headlines" or "Issues: Pro and Con" sections. Special features include sections on newspaper editorials and editorial cartoons, and "Find a Research Topic."
Issues and Controversies covers more than 800 topics in business, politics, government, education, and popular culture. It is updated weekly, with links to a 12-year back-file.

CQ Researcher contains in-depth reports, about 30 pages each, on current topics. A new report is published each week. Each report includes a Pro/Con page giving expert opinions on both sides of a controversial question within the topic. A history of the topic, statistics, and sources for further information are also given. Search or browse by topic. Check the "Hot Topics" section for the latest updates on popular topics. Global Researcher, covering international topics, has recently been added to the database.
