Ancient History

This library guide will help you find reliable information on ancient history, beginning with the earliest civilizations in the Mediterranean and Near East, and continuing through the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century AD.

Reference Sources

History reference sources can be useful for getting a brief overview of a topic or time period within ancient history, and placing them in a broader historical context. These sources may also refer you to related books, articles, and other helpful materials. They are therefore often ideal for beginning your research.

Most print reference sources must be used in the library. Photocopies are 15 cents per page. In some of the campus libraries, you can scan pages onto a flash drive free of charge.

Selected Dictionaries

Subject dictionaries define words and terms related to a particular topic or set of topics. Some subject dictionaries offer in-depth definitions.

Selected Subject Encyclopedias

Subject encyclopedias provide brief overviews of topics, and can be especially good at placing topics in a larger context. Click on a title to find out which STLCC Libraries own the item.

Reference Databases
