Success in college requires more than academic skills. Our researchers study nonacademic factors that influence success as well as student support services such as counseling, success courses, and online registration and advising systems. We also study the effects of student employment and financial aid on student outcomes (Community College Research Center).

Elizabeth Mann Levesque, a nonresident fellow at the Brookings Institution's Brown Center on Education Policy and author of this 2018 report on barriers to completion for community college students, said career services also can play an important role in academic success. "For students to stay motivated to persist on their academic trajectory," she wrote, "they need to both see the destination (the careers and earnings an education will provide) and the pathway to get there (the connections between what they are doing in school and what they would like to achieve)."

On October 16, 2018, Gretchen Schmidt, the Executive Director of AACC Pathways Project provided a webinar on “Guided Pathways 101.” The webinar includes an overview of guided pathways, as well as updates based on learning and research from the national Pathways Project and the Pathways Collaborative Partners.

League for Innovation in the Community College Annual Conference. This session presented an actionable framework for leveraging new advising technologies to deliver holistic, learning-centered student support. This interactive session drew on panelist experiences implementing key components of the framework.

CCRC and the Aspen Institute’s College Excellence Program are partnering with state higher education agencies in Florida and Washington to improve the outcomes of college acceleration strategies for underrepresented high school students, particularly students of color and those from low-income families. Technology-enhanced advising reform, also known as integrated planning and advising (IPASS), requires coordination across an institution. Involving all stakeholders in an initiative will promote a cohesive, connected, and consistent experience for students and have the biggest impact on student success goals. This infographic looks at whom to invite to the advising reform table.

States, districts, and schools use research-based indicators to identify students at-risk of failing to meet key educational milestones such as reading at grade level, on-time graduation, or college readiness and college persistence. By identifying students early, educators can target interventions and supports to help students to achieve readiness and success.
