Created for the chat transcript analysis activity, service week Spring 2019.

Questions to consider

  1. What are your overall impressions of the service that the patrons received?
  2. Which of the transactions did you think was the most effective? Least effective? Why?
  3. What positive feedback would you give to the staff providing the service?
  4. What improvements would you suggest?
  5. Were there any opportunities for information literacy instruction? Did the librarians use these opportunities?
  6. Which interaction (or parts of interactions) seemed transformational? Which seemed transactional? 
  7. What do you see that you want to remember when you are providing virtual reference?

Discuss amongst yourselves for 10-12 minutes and then report back to the large group.

Patron: I'm looking for information on the holiday of Our Lady of Las Mercedes

Patron: Hi

Librarian: Ok, so you're looking for info on Our Lady of Las Mercedes?

Patron: yes

Librarian: Some background info and/or is this for a particular assignment or project

Librarian: ?

Patron: Yes I'm researching information about the Holiday of Our Lady Las Mercedes of the Dominican Republic

Librarian: Ok, stand by a minute while I search some of our sources

Patron: Ok

Patron: Hi, I recently requested "For an America that loved freaks" for a project on primary source analysis. Since the project is due Monday I was curious how long it will take for me to get this item? Let me know if you know

Librarian: This is xxxxx Just a moment while I look this up.

Patron: Thank you! I just submitted my question on a formal request document by the way, so just ignore if you see my question twice

Librarian: Did you request this through ILLIAD?

Patron: I think so

Patron: Is EBSCOhost the same thing?

Librarian: This is an article, then?

Patron: Yes

Librarian: OK, so you did request it through ILLIAD. This sort of request takes a day or two to fill. When we find it, a PDF will be emailed to you.

Patron: Okay, thank you. I just want to give myself enough time to analyze it before Monday

Librarian: OK. If you have any further questions the ILL office phone is 314 984-4444. Ask for Sylvie.

Patron: Thank you!
