Gijón is the largest city in Asturias and considered to be more liberal than conservative Oviedo. Its position on the coast means that the city is closely tied to the sea, both for work and play, and is somewhat of a surfing destination. The old town area of Cimadevilla is located on a headland that protrudes out near San Lorenzo Beach and was built on the site of a Roman settlement.

San Lorenzo Beach and its promenade is a focal point of Gijón.
