Introduction

The STLCC Libraries believe that the fight for racial justice is a necessity, and we grieve for those who have lost their lives to systemic racism and injustice.

This guide is intended to provide our students with resources and background information on race, racism, and the struggle for racial justice in America. For other needs, STLCC provides counseling and support for all students.

Counseling Center
The Counseling Center provides students with free appointments for personal counseling, both for mental health concerns and for dealing with stress and crisis.
Student Advocacy & Resource Center
The Student Advocacy & Resource Center provides help for a wide variety of issues, including finding financial support, child care, and even housing.

Scope

This research guide was initially created in response to the August 2014 protests in the city of Ferguson, Missouri following the shooting death of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, by a white police officer. Ferguson is home to the Florissant Valley campus of the St. Louis Community College, and for this reason, the campus is strongly invested in the community. Understanding that the events in Ferguson would prompt classroom discussions, open forums and potential academic courses, this guide was designed to include not only Ferguson, but other events in the history of Black protest in the U.S. as well.
