Best Practices and Accessibility

Standards, best practices, and accessibility tips for STLCC Libraries guide authors.

Overview

Guidelines for course guides are more flexible than for other types of guides, since they are focused on the needs of the course. With this mind, try to adhere to general design principles to ensure some consistency with the rest of the site.

Tips for Course Guides

  • Rationale: Is a course guide needed? There may be an existing research guide that covers all the necessary content, or that could be edited or updated to meet the course needs.
  • Instructor Collaboration: it is important to work carefully with the course instructor to tailor the guide to a course assignment or research topic.
  • Citation Style: if a major assignment for the course is a research paper, consider including a page/box on the appropriate bibliographic citation style.
  • Profile: Consider including your profile box and/or contact information.

Naming Convention

Use this format:

Course prefix & number - Instructor - [optional topic] - Semester

For more than one instructor, you can either leave out the instructor's name or name all of them. For example, all of the ENG 060 courses use the same guide with a specific topic or theme.

Examples:

  • ENG 060 - Education in the United States - Fall 2025
  • ENG 101 - Walz - 2025 Fall
