Best Practices and Accessibility

Standards, best practices, and accessibility tips for STLCC Libraries guide authors.

Images

Images can liven up a page. They can catch the user's eye. They can break up text. They can provide graphical clues about content.

It's important to adhere to copyright and accessibility standards when using images.

  • All Images need to have Alternate text (ALT tags) included. You can check this by double-clicking the image when in the rich text edit mode.
  • If the image is only decorative, use the "null" ALT tag which is "" (open and close quotation marks, no space).
  • If the image links to a resource make sure the image ALT tag also describes the destination. Screenshot of how to add alternative text to an image within the rich-text editor.
  • Alt tags should be very brief and descriptive but not redundant. Don't repeat the same content from the image into the alt text.
  • Avoid using "Image of..." since this is understood to be an image.

Multimedia Resources

In addition to text based resources consider adding podcasts, videos and other multimedia. They can add interest and appeal to guides as well as useful information.

It's important to adhere to copyright standards when using multimedia.

Minimize Print Resource Lists

Use the Book from the Catalog feature to highlight print resources.

Yet, keep mentions of print resources to a minimum. The best resource may be print. However, long lists of resources inaccessible via the web will frustrate or confuse most users.
